MOROCCO – AN UNFORGETTABLE JOURNEY

Probably the most cliché thing to say about Morocco is that it’s a fascinating place. Nevertheless, it’s probably the best word to describe the country.

Even though we have read quite a bit on the internet about Morocco in general and Marrakesh in particular, nothing could have prepared us for the experience of getting to the accommodation in Jemaa El-Fnaa square late in the evening.

Our minibus dropped us at a street corner and we had to make it on foot through the square. As soon as you start walking you are surrounded by people selling you this and that, offering you accommodation. You look around and see snake charmers, aggressive food stall employees literally dragging you to their tables. One step wrong and you could be tramping over someone’s lamps collection laid out on the ground.

Oh, and the smell! Let’s just say it’s an exotic mix of cooked food, incense and horse piss. Once you get used to all the above, you somehow grow to like the place once you have the chance to explore it.

Essaouira is the exact opposite of Marrakesh: a small beach town with a wonderful old Medina, a long sandy beach and a quiet and relaxing vibe. If you miss haggling, try the seafood restaurants near the fish market. You’ll perfect your negotiating skills and you’ll get a delicious meal in return!

The following day we started our journey to the Sahara Desert. We stopped for a visit at Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou. The ksar, a group of earthen buildings surrounded by high walls, is a traditional pre-Saharan habitat. The houses crowd together within the defensive walls, which are reinforced by corner towers.

I have to admit it: I wasn’t a big fan of waterfalls. I had the preconceived idea that they were pretty much the all the same and I considered them quite boring. Our day trip to Ouzud Falls proved me wrong. The falls are spectacular by themselves and you also have the chance to pet some nosy monkeys on your way. If you don’t care about the monkeys, then you should definitively try swimming in the waterfall! Best way to cool off during a hot summer day!

The highlight of our 5-day tour was undoubtedly the Sahara Desert.

Riding a camel caravan at sunset and spending the night in tents in the middle of the desert? This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, something that should be on everyone’s bucket list!

A HUGE THANKS TO ALL THE PEOPLE IN OUR GROUP FOR MAKING THIS TRIP AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE!

TE SĂRUT! TE SĂRUT!
